S.M.A.R.T Now Easier than Ever
If you’re a UT student on a budget - and you’re definitely not alone - then you have probably heard about the S.M.A.R.T. housing program. The SMART program is a housing assistance program that’s provided by many of the larger apartment complexes in the West Campus area - West Campus apartments such as Jefferson 26, The Block, The Quarters, and more. The basic premise of the program is that if you are a financial aid recipient you can qualify for reduced pricing on certain apartments - usually the basic 1BR floor plans. Well just recently changes in the S.M.A.R.T. housing policies have expanded eligibility not just to those who receive a certain amount of money from financial aid (as was the case before), but to anyone who receives financial aid at all from a need-based provider on the list. Whereas before you had to derive a large portion of your financial support from financial aid, with the new requirements you simply must be an aid recipient. And the changes to the list are most impressive: the list covers everything from specific endowed scholarships (i.e. A&A Vanderlee Endowed Scholarship) to extremely broad categories which are highly inclusive such as “Work Study” or “Pell Grant.” That’s the best part of the changes - virtually anyone receiving financial aid is going to be able to locate their aid type on the list. But what about the apartments available through the program? The photo above is from one of the kitchens at a Jefferson 26 SMART housing unit - hardly a budget finish out! Below is another photo of a building that offers SMART housing - the Block also has 1BR units available. Pricing is SUPER affordable considering that the square footage on most of the units is around 500 square feet and they are within walking distance to class. To give just a few examples, the Quarters S.M.A.R.T. housing units are just $794 and are 529 square feet, the Block has units for just $749 starting at around 450 square feet, and Jefferson 26 has units available for just $775 that are almost 600 square feet!
